      時評賽 | China's rapid urbanization

The National Bureau of Statistics reported that in the 75 years since the establishment of the People's Republic of China, China has undergone the largest and fastest urbanization process in human history. At the end of 1949, China had only 129 cities with a total population of 39.49 million people. By the end of 2023, the number of cities had reached 694, with the population of cities at or above the prefecture-level reaching 673.13 million people. Among them, there are 29 cities with a population of over 5 million, and 11 cities with a population of over 10 million.

This rapid urbanization has been driven by China's rapid economic growth and the government's strong support for urban development. The process has not only led to the construction of modern urban infrastructure, but also brought about significant changes in people's lives, such as improved living standards and better access to education and healthcare.

However, the rapid urbanization process also brings challenges, such as traffic congestion, environmental pollution, and the rising cost of living. To tackle these challenges, the Chinese government is advocating for a "new-type urbanization" that focuses on improving the quality of urban life, rather than just the size of cities. This includes improving public transportation, promoting green building practices, and creating more job opportunities for rural migrant workers.

In conclusion, China's rapid urbanization has been a key driver of its economic success, but the country now faces the challenge of managing the side effects of this growth. By focusing on improving the quality of urban life, China can continue to grow its cities in a sustainable way, benefiting both urban and rural residents.
